Freshmen Find Home Where NP is

The annual Movie Night and Freshmen Dance Party, organised by the Ngee Ann Polytechnic Students’ Union (NPSU), helped freshmen better integrate into their new life in Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP).

On Apr 19, the freshmen were invited to attend “KAPOW!” Movie Night, which lasted from 6:30 pm to 11 pm. The movie night saw a huge turnout with  Wonder Woman and Thor Ragnorak as showcase items.

NPSU is a student-run body that organises events and camps to promote and safeguard the interests of the polytechnic and its student body.

Ernest Lim Jun Wei, 17, a freshman from the School of InfoComm Technology, said: “I came because I really wanted to watch Thor for free, but it was fun because I got to relax with my classmates and got to know them better.”

However, the most anticipated freshmen event was the Freshmen Dance Party. The dance party is the most popular event amongst freshmen because it allows them to get an exciting preview of being in a club, and well-known DJs are hired to play the music. This year saw DJ Nash D, who often plays at one of the trendiest clubs in Singapore, Zouk.

Aside from all the fun, NPSU had a clear mission, which was to help freshmen make new friends, and enjoy themselves.

Muiz Zuddin, 20, a graduate from the School of Engineering, said that he made friends with some of the freshmen, which he finds rare, because he is someone that is leaving the school, and they are people who have just entered. Muiz joined NPSU because he was “kind of a lonely kid” when he entered polytechnic and before meeting his group leaders from NPSU who reached out to him and helped him to be someone better.

Wan Zhen, 20, a senior from NPSU who came to help out at the event, said that the movie night was a successful event because “we have a whole group of NPSU students doing it, and we worked together to come up with the small things”.

Muiz said: “This is the kind of bond we want to create, we don’t want [freshmen] to feel that there’s a hierarchy in this school, we want them to feel that everyone is together no matter what.
